Facts About the Carpet Industry
Commercial vs. Residential Use
The Carpet and Rug Institute frequently
receives the following inquiries:
"What is the percentage of carpet
sales for commercial versus residential use?"
"How do commercial sales break down in terms of end use?"
The Carpet and Rug Institute has compiled the following two figures to
graphically display the breakdown of carpet sales in 2001 (the most recent
year for which data is available). The data in the following charts was
obtained from the publication "Floor Covering News" and is based
on 2001 annual sales. For more information, contact Matt Spieler, Floor
Covering News, by email or phone at 516-932-7639.
Figure 1. Commercial vs. Residential Carpet
Sales
In 2001, approximately 53% of carpet sales was for residential
applications and 47% for commercial applications.

Figure 2. Commercial Carpet Installation
Commercial installation is broken down into six (6) categories: Corporate
(30%); Retail (18%); Educational (15%); Health Care (15%); Hospitality
(13%); and "Government and other" (9%).
